LASIK surgeon Dr. Stephen Updegraff is the medical director of Updegraff Vision in Tampa and St. Petersburg, Florida. He has received board certification from the American Board of Ophthalmology, is a Fellow of the American College of Surgeons, and is a founding member of the American College of Ophthalmic Surgery. In addition, Dr. Updegraff is a member of the American Academy of Ophthalmology, the American Society of Cataract and Refractive Surgery, and the International Society of Refractive Surgery.
Dr. Updegraff has been keenly interested in ophthalmology since childhood, when he enjoyed accompanying his father, ophthalmologist Ambrose Updegraff, M.D., FACS, on his rounds visiting patients. After graduating from the McCallie School, Dr. Stephen Updegraff earned his B.S. in Biology from Eckerd College in St. Petersburg, Florida, and his M.D. from Penn State College of Medicine in Hershey, Pennsylvania; completed a research elective in ophthalmic pathology at Johns Hopkins University’s Wilmer Eye Institute in Baltimore, Maryland, and an internship in ophthalmology at Louisiana State University’s Charity Hospital in New Orleans; and finished his ophthalmology residency at the LSU Eye Center. Dr. Updegraff then went on to complete advanced subspecialty training through a fellowship in cornea, refractive, and laser surgery at the Hermann Eye Center at the University of Texas-Houston.
Dr. Updegraff has been a pioneer in LASIK throughout his entire career. During his fellowship training, Dr. Updegraff was a member of a team of surgeons who studied and perfected LASIK in Bogota, Colombia. He went on to perform the third LASIK surgery in the United States during its FDA clinical trials, and then performed the first LASIK in Asia while demonstrating it for and teaching it to hundreds of Chinese doctors. Dr. Updegraff has been actively involved in developing techniques and technologies used in eye surgery, and has earned five U.S. patents for LASIK as well as two for microsurgery of the eye.
Over the course of his career, Dr. Updegraff has received a number of awards and honors for his work in refractive surgery. In 2009, he was presented with the Distinguished Citizens Award by the West Central Florida Council of the Boy Scouts in America, and also earned the Best Paper in Session Award from the American Society of Cataract and Refractive Surgery. Dr. Updegraff has also received the Kritzinger Award from the international Society of Refractive Surgery and the South African Society of Cataract and Refractive Surgery, the Kadel Outstanding Career Achievement Award from Eckerd College, and the Achievement Award from the American Academy of Ophthalmology. Additionally, Dr. Updegraff has been included on the peer-selected U.S. News & World Report’s Top Doctors list and the Best Doctors in America list, and has been recognized by Premier Surgeon as a Leading Innovator in Premium IOL implant surgery.
